44 ‘The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. 47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
In this text the “Kingdom of Heaven” refers to our value system and the choices we make. What is important to us? What would be so important that we would be willing to sell everything or sacrifice everything to go after “it?” For many going to college is a no-brainer. For others who were not encouraged to attend college and then decide to go later in life, it can be a huge sacrifice. It can involve leaving a paying job to not working and most likely incurring debt. We all have a God given drive within us and when that spark is ignited it can feel like nothing can stop us until we have achieved the goal or bought the field.
Often our choices are not clear cut nor nicely labeled so that we can make the best choice. We carry tension as we try to discern the best path. Sometimes the choice is between what is in my personal best interest and the environment or society as a whole. For example, do I choose a socially responsible investment with a potential lower return or military arms productions with a likely greater return on investment? The more we learn about God’s contrary, upside down, nonsensical ways of being in the world through our lenses of community, peace, simplicity and service, we will find ourselves doing things that may not make sense to others. We need to listen to the spirit of God for wisdom and discernment as choices are put before us regularly.
