Matthew 11:2-11 Children can follow along in Spark 234, and another story in Shine On 216.
Verses 4-6 “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.”
This passage starts with John asking if Jesus is the one they have waited for. Jesus' reply responds with actions. He is not sidestepping John's question, but intentionally putting the question back on John. If John is truly waiting for the sick to be healed and the poor to have good news about life, then Jesus is the one. If John is waiting for a different kind of leader that will reside in the Temple, Palace or "Pentagon," then Jesus is simply not the answer. Jesus will not come with millions of dollars, the latest military tech, or the mandate of a political election. Instead Jesus simply comes as himself. He eats and teaches with the sick and poor. He hangs out with those who rarely make it to the palace or temple.
The big question for me in my life, is not only what kind of Jesus do I believe in, but what kind of God do I believe in? Am I waiting for a God to fill my bank account, give me security, and make decisions that favor me? Or have I already found the God that I can full heartedly believe in? The God that never leaves anyone behind. The God that gives hope to the oppressed. The God that loves the sick. The God that doesn't favor the rich, powerful, elite, or strongest. The God that is with us, in every day life, if we take the time to notice.
