Dorothy Day led a life that eventually led her to write about and be with the homeless. Why do we have homelessness in a nation with so much wealth and resources? Why do spend so much time on other things such as war and security?
"Today 236 Catholic Worker communities remain committed to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, prayer, and hospitality for the homeless, exiled, hungry, and forsaken. Catholic Workers continue to protest injustice, war, racism, and violence of all forms." CatholicWorker.Org
The Booths wanted to help the poor in London, but found that most of the churches were not ready to be with the poor and hungry and drunk. So they started preaching on the street to the homeless and poor (who were not readily invited into the church). Then they started feeding the hungry and poor. Then they started helping the drunk. Finally they started their own churches where anyone could come, especially the poor, hungry, homeless, drunk and sick.
