Holy Week there will not be Peace School. Instead please note the following options for our children, youth and families:
Classes for all ages will continue on April 3rd.
This Holy Week may you hear God's invitation, remember Jesus' example and feel the Spirit's guidance in your life.
Peace School on Sunday started a three week journey through Easter for the Pre-K, K-2nd and Venture Club (3rd-5th) classes. Easter has always been a bit of a challenge for us to teach in one Sunday. Just as we can only share so many Bible stories during our 9 months each year, we can only share so much of the Easter story in one class time together. So starting last year, Anita (Children & Youth Faith Formation Coordinator) put together a plan to walk through Holy Week in three lessons:
I don't know if God will resurrect us like Jesus was resurrected. But I personally do believe that God will always be with the forgotten, left out, marginalized, oppressed, depressed, imprisoned and executed. God doesn't seek a hierarchy or justice system, but leaders and justice that always start with the weakest and lowliest. I hear my God calling me to bring hope and good news that life does not have to be so violent, hateful, oppressive and broken. We can live a life toward relationships, love, peace, and a justice that saves everyone.
Imagine if the religious elite can dream a religion that brings people close to God. Imagine if the economic elite can dream of enough resources for everyone. Imagine if the political elite can dream of decisions including the well-being of the weakest? Imagine if the soldiers and police brought relief instead of distress.
God, may Jesus break open our imaginations today as he did 2,000 years ago.
Sunday, please remember that there will be a Soup Fundraiser to support the MYF this year. We'll be serving till 12:30pm, and we'll save enough Chicken Noodle Soup till noon for all Peace School children. The other two soups will be Smoked Pork Chili and Tomato Bisque. Funds support MYF activities throughout the year, and especially the summer trips, which is to Busby, MT with SOOP this year.
The JYF will not be having their regular Peace School class because of their DOOR Weekend. Those participating in the DOOR Weekend will be attending His Love Fellowship a few blocks away.
The younger ages will be learning the Parables of Jesus this week. Jesus used many parables that people collected in the Gospels. During Lent we've been using a famous painting of the "Prodigal Son." How many other parables stick in our mind as we wrestle with God's ways in our life today?
Looking ahead, please consider attending the Maundy Thursday or Good Friday services during Holy Week, March 24 & 25. The Maundy Thursday service will include bread and juice as we remember the Last Supper and the Stations of the Cross, followed by an optional Foot Washing. The Good Friday service will include the singing of the Holden Evening Prayer and the extinguishing of candles as we remember the crucifixion and execution of Jesus.
Peace School this week will include a service project for the younger ages, an MCC Video series of the JYF on the military, and a conversation about Hesston with the MYF.
As we close in on Easter Sunday, what are the stories that we resonate with and that we yearn for? We've been hearing Jesus stories in the Venture Club and younger since December, and we'll continue doing so past Easter Sunday into April. So what do we resonate with and yearn for? With the tragedy in Hesston, KS, are we getting tired of violence in the news? With Super Tuesday in the headlines, are we getting tired of being lobbied? Or do these parts of our lives motivate us in meaningful ways? I hope and pray we continue these next three months of Peace School in a way of believing that there are alternatives to bitter politics and daily deadly violence. I hope and pray our children read, discover, learn and act a way of hope and salvation that we will always need. Jesus may have lived on earth for a specific season, but the systems and evil he engaged are still around today, and in our daily lives. May Jesus' Way inspire and guide us today!
