During their journey with God, the people of God went through MANY emotions. The Psalms is sort of like their spiritual journal and conversation with God. While parts of the Bible seemed to be filtered or edited, the Psalms seem less so. They can beautifully poetic and lyrical, and yet they can also be quite authentic and harsh. Read all the Psalms, and you are likely to encounter nearly every emotion a group of people can experience. Today, our closest example is our hymnal, that also has a wide range of lyrics and emotions for just about every part of our spiritual journey and life. Do you have a favorite hymn for when you're happy, sad, confused, or joyful?
Reflect - Reflect on the Psalms with your own Bible (5th Graders), Spark Story Bible (4th Graders) or Shine On Story Bible (3rd Graders):
Psalm 8 (Spark 158)
Psalm 23 (Spark 160, Spark 128)
Psalm 104 (Shine 130)
Psalm 121 (Shine 132)
You can also do this activity at home during the week from Building Faith, an Anabaptist resource. This activity reminds adults of the hope and learning that children offer us daily, let alone during Advent - "Revealed to Infants."
Pray - Consider reciting a version (or part) of Mary's Prayer from Luke 1:46-55. One is listed below (and another version is on 204 in Spark and 160 in Shine).
Serve - While we anticipate getting gifts this next week before Christmas, how do you also give gifts to those beyond your relatives and friends? What is the meaning of Christmas as we consider our core values of Community, Simplicity, Peace and Service?
Explore - Watch these videos below from our Jewish friends about the Psalms.
Mary's Song (Luke 1:46-55)
‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
48 for he has looked with favour on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’
